This special art ebook collects 55 prints by three of ukiyo-e's major artists – Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, and Kunichika. Kunisada is represented by a selection of images from the world of kabuki theatre, such as his "Modern Suikoden" series of 1861, which uses contemporary actors as models for the tattooed outlaws of the classic Chinese novel "Water Margin". Kuniyoshi is represented by images from his most famous series, "108 Suikoden Heroes" (1827-30), which single-handedly popularized the musha-e ("warrior prints") genre and made images of tattooed outlaws fashionable, and also by some kabuki prints showing tattooed actors. Kunichika, who specialised in kabuki prints, is repesented by a selection of these images which all show tattooed actors of his time – the late 19th-century Meiji period – posing as outlaws, killers and brigands.
